Tanner Kern '15: A Journey of Resilience and Dedication

Tanner Kern, a 2015 graduate of Xavier High School, exemplifies resilience, dedication, and a deep commitment to supporting those who serve our country. His remarkable journey from a high school football standout to a dedicated runner and philanthropist is an inspiring tale of transformation and altruism.

Tanner’s dedication to service is rooted in his time at Xavier High School where he was a standout offensive lineman on the football team. His exceptional talent and leadership helped the Falcons secure two Division Championships. His prowess on the field led him to play collegiately at Lafayette. Unfortunately, his playing career was cut short due to injuries.

After his football career ended, Tanner faced a new challenge. He weighed around 340 pounds but was determined to reinvent himself. Through sheer grit and perseverance, he shed more than 140 pounds, a remarkable feat that illustrated the unfaltering resolve that lay within him. This transformative phase not only reshaped his outward appearance but also ignited a newfound passion within him—running. Four years ago he ran his first marathon, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

Tanner's journey as a runner took on a philanthropic dimension that would leave an enduring impact on those in need.

In May of 2024, Tanner, along with his cousin Jordan, undertook an extraordinary challenge: running from the 9/11 Memorial in Boston to the 9/11 Memorial in Downtown Manhattan. This grueling 220-mile journey was not just a test of physical endurance but, more importantly, a mission to raise funds for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation which supports catastrophically injured veterans, first responders, and Gold Star Families. Their efforts were a resounding success, raising more than $11,000 for the foundation. Reflecting on this achievement, Tanner stated, "Our first responders and veterans are the backbone of this country, and to be able to support them and this charity is a no-brainer."

The 220-mile journey Tanner and Jordan embarked on took them through the heart of Connecticut. Averaging around 31 miles per day over seven days, they made it a point to stop at as many firehouses and police stations as they could, honoring the first responders who inspire their mission.

This act of kindness and empathy reflects the essence of Tanner's character a dedication to making a difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for others. What makes Tanner's philanthropic efforts even more extraordinary is that it was not the first time he and Jordan had embarked on such a laudable initiative.

Several years ago, they undertook a long-distance run from Canada to Connecticut, raising funds for Food Share, a food bank in Wallingford, Connecticut. Because of their consistent commitment to serving their community they have had on those around them.

This initial endeavor showcased their commitment to helping others and set the stage for future philanthropic efforts. After taking a four-year hiatus from long runs, they were inspired by the mission of Tunnel to Towers and decided to take on another ambitious challenge.

Tanner Kern’s journey is a powerful testament to the human spirit’s capacity for transformation and the profound impact of dedication to a cause greater than oneself. His journey from the gridiron to marathon running and his unwavering support for his local community and first responders serve as an inspiration to all.
