Champions again.
On Tuesday night, the Xavier Indoor Track & Field Team continued its reign of dominance, capturing its fourth consecutive CIAC Class L State Championship in commanding fashion. The Falcons amassed 88 points, soaring past second-place Windsor (58 points) by a decisive 30-point margin.
As the meet unfolded, Xavier’s depth and determination were on full display. The Falcons dominated the middle-distance events, with three runners finishing in the top four of the 1,000-meter run. Senior Ian Schmeelk led the charge with a second-place finish in 2:40.32, followed closely by classmates Jack Ouellette (third, 2:40.37) and Owen Martin (fourth, 2:40.75).
Martin and Ouellette continued their standout performances in the 1,600, where Martin claimed the state title with a winning time of 4:24.15. Ouellette was right behind him, finishing second in 4:25.22.
In the grueling 3,200-meter run, Ouellette flipped the script, seizing his own state championship with a time of 9:37.10. Martin added a runner-up finish (9:38.16), while freshman Nolan O’Connor showed the program’s promising future by placing fourth in 10:01.59.
The Falcons also made their mark in the relays. Xavier’s 4x800 relay team—O’Connor, juniors Landon Rubano and Xavier Laudati, and freshman Holden Hines—secured third place with a time of 8:24.40. Meanwhile, the 1,600 Sprint Medley quartet of senior Ronan Finnegan, junior Justin Torres, Laudati, and Schmeelk finished second with a time of 3:42.78.
In the field events, senior Oliver Guzy delivered a stellar performance in the long jump, finishing second. Senior Tyler Lanning cleared the bar to place fourth in the pole vault, and senior Nicholas Meisenkothen landed a fourth-place finish in the shot put.
With another championship banner earned, Xavier’s Indoor Track & Field legacy continues to grow. The Falcons’ relentless drive, depth, and discipline once again proved the difference, securing a fourth straight title and adding another chapter to the program’s storied history.
